Description
MANESSON-MALLET (Allain). A Description of the Universe, containing the various systems of the world, and general and detailed maps of ancient and modern geography. Paris, Denys Thierry, 1683. 5 volumes in-8, brown calfskin, decorated spine, edges speckled with red (contemporary binding). First edition of this compendium of geographical knowledge of the period. Abundant engravings in intaglio, comprising 5 frontispiece titles, a portrait of the author, a portrait of King Louis XIV, approximately 670 full-page figures, maps, plans and views within the text, and 12 (out of 14) plates. Volume One is devoted to geographical systems, whilst the others cover the various continents. Of particular note in Volume V are a map of Virginia and one of the Isle of California. Manesson-Mallet (1630–1706), a French master of mathematics, geographer and cartographer, was also a military engineer specialising in siege warfare; in 1671 he published his *Travaux de Mars*. (Brunet, vol. III, col. 1343; Sabin, no. 44130.) An unidentified engraved ex-libris bearing a coat of arms (featuring a gold chevron accompanied by three birds) (cf. OHR, pl. 323). A fine copy in a contemporary binding. Two plates are missing from Volume III, forming part of the ‘Additions de l’Afrique’. Minor defects: three worn cap edges and rubbed or damaged corners. Expert: Mr Dominique Courvoisier
