Description
FER (Nicolas de). Petit et nouveau atlas. Paris, Le Sieur de Fer, 1705. Oblong folio, orange-coloured coarse-grained morocco leather, title in gilt capital letters between two large green mosaic scrolls on the front cover, in a Plexiglas slipcase with a sliding clasp (Claudine Jacqmin). An atlas entirely engraved on copper, comprising a title page engraved by Nicolas Guérard, 19 maps engraved by Charles Inselin—including a general map of the globe—and 19 text plates. On the map of America, the western part—which had not been explored at the time—is left blank and bears the following engraved inscription: ‘This region is entirely unknown’. Water stain at the end; the last two plates are doubled. A significant tear, with no loss of material, has been repaired on one text plate. Paper restoration along the edge or at the corner of several plates. Expert: Mr Dominique Courvoisier
