Description
VERLAINE (Paul). *Parallèlement*. Paris, Imprimerie nationale, Ambroise Vollard, 1900. In-4, burgundy morocco, binding decorated with a set of four gilt fillets framed by a triple blind-stamped fillet, the whole encircled by a gilt fillet, spine decorated with fillets in the same style, this framing repeated on the orange morocco lining, orange morocco endpapers, edges gilt on endpapers, cover and spine, half-moroquin slipcase, case (P.-L. Martin, 1949). One of the masterpieces of the illustrated book and the first book published by Ambroise Vollard. It is adorned with a frontispiece and 108 lithographs by Pierre Bonnard, including 21 full-page illustrations, printed in pink and blending with Verlaine’s prose in a skilful yet free layout, as well as 9 black woodcuts engraved by Tony Beltrand. Printed in an edition of 200 copies, including 30 ‘chine’ copies. A copy on Dutch vellum, from the first print run, bearing the mark of the Imprimerie nationale, which was subsequently replaced by a vignette by Bonnard so as not to associate the effigy of the Republic with a book deemed licentious. Perfect binding by Pierre-Lucien Martin. From the François Ragazzoni library (III, 2003, no. 323). Expert: Mr Dominique Courvoisier
