The Jama-Coaque culture flourished on the northwest coast of Ecuador, in a fertile region open to coastal trade. It is distinguished by its rich polychrome ceramic production, featuring hierarchical figures with elaborate finery. This figure, representing a dignitary in the prime of life, is characterised by the importance of the ear ornaments, the headband and the necklace, as well as by the presence of body paint suggesting a ceremonial context. These elements bear witness to a structured society, where status was expressed through pomp and pageantry.
