In Jama-Coaque culture, music, dance and song play an essential role in ceremonial practices. Representations of musicians bear witness to these collective moments when rhythms and sounds accompany rituals. One of the figures is holding a maracas-type percussion instrument, while the other is playing a flute made up of several tubes, similar to the Andean flutes that are well documented in Peru. The presence of this instrument in Ecuador bears witness to its widespread use throughout the Andean region. The ensemble, richly adorned, reflects a staging of the musical gesture in a ceremonial context.
