Description
- Vase with two musicians. Terracotta with remnants of polychromy, broken and glued, small amount of filling probably not exceeding 2 to 5% of the overall mass of the work. Jama-Coaque, Ecuador, 500 BC - 500 AD 14 x 18.5 cm Provenance: Sens Enchères sale, Sens, 22 May 2005, lot no. 53 In Jama-Coaque culture, music, dance and song play an essential role in ceremonial practices. Representations of musicians bear witness to these collective moments when rhythms and sounds accompany rituals. One of the figures is holding a maracas-type percussion instrument, while the other is playing a flute made up of several tubes, similar to the Andean flutes that are well documented in Peru. The presence of this instrument in Ecuador bears witness to its widespread use throughout the Andean region. The ensemble, richly adorned, reflects a staging of the musical gesture in a ceremonial context.
