Description
- Priest seated on a tuber-shaped seat Polychrome terracotta, slightly broken and glued, minor restoration not exceeding 5 to 10% of the overall mass of the work, mark of time. Jama-Coaque, Ecuador, 500 BC - 500 AD 45 x 26 x 25 cm Archolabs TL thermoluminescence analysis, 26 January 2005 Provenance: Arcadia Enchères sale, Amiens, 19 June 2005, lot no. 36 In the Jama-Coaque culture, the figures of richly adorned dignitaries are associated with religious functions and fertility rituals. The figure, seated on a seat reminiscent of a tuber, refers to the importance of agricultural resources and the earth's regenerative powers. The abundance of finery and the nasal ornament confirm his rank, while the spout at the top of the figure indicates a receptacle function, probably linked to ritual liquids. The richness of the decoration and the complexity of the design make this a highly symbolic piece.
