Description
- Seated chief in hieratic posture.
Terracotta with remnants of polychromy, slightly broken and glued, with small fillings not exceeding 2 to 5% of the overall mass of the work.
Bahía, Ecuador, 500 BC - 500 AD
34 x 24 x 18 cm
Provenance: acquired by Mr Martinez in a public auction, Drouot Paris, in 1970, expert Charles Ratton (according to the inventory made by him in 2007).
The Bahía culture, which developed on the coast of Ecuador, is characterised by powerful, stylised human representations. This figure, with its stocky body and accentuated musculature, particularly in the arms, reflects a desire to emphasise strength and authority. The face, with its raised eyes and open mouth, suggests constant vigilance and an assertive presence. The overall effect is one of direct, formal writing, in which the modelling serves as a condensed representation of power.
