The cultures of western Mexico, particularly in the Nayarit region, produced statuary characterised by human figures with compact, expressive volumes. This female figure, crouching and as if curled up on herself, is characterised by a compact construction of the body and a strong plastic presence. The numerous ornaments, particularly on the ears and arms, indicate a high status within the group.
