Description
- Crouching female figure. Coffee-red and brown terracotta, small chips, age mark. Nayarit, western Mexico, 100 BC - 250 AD 20.5 x 13 x 13 cm Provenance: acquired from Galerie Mermoz, Paris, 7 November 1977. The cultures of western Mexico, particularly in the Nayarit region, produced statuary characterised by human figures with compact, expressive volumes. This female figure, crouching and as if curled up on herself, is characterised by a compact construction of the body and a strong plastic presence. The numerous ornaments, particularly on the ears and arms, indicate a high status within the group. Taken as a whole, the work bears witness to the attention paid to the representation of the individual, through a direct and balanced formal style.
