Brown and orange terracotta, marks of time
Chinesco, western Mexico, c. 100 BC - 250 AD
35 x 16.5 x 14.5 cm
Provenance: acquired by Mr Martinez from the former Arts des Amériques gallery, Paris, between the late 1970s and early 1980s.
This figure belongs to the Chinesco productions of western Mexico, characterised by full volumes and a strong stylisation. The figure, seated in a stable posture, has accentuated proportions at the hips and thighs, emphasising the female body.
The head shows a deliberate cranial deformation, topped by a double-row headband, a social marker attested to in these regions. The discreet ornamentation contributes to the balance of the composition.
The ensemble is characterised by the simplicity of its treatment and the accuracy of its volumes, giving rise to a calm presence and a certain gentleness of expression.
