Description
- Important statue showing a lord in the prime of life wearing a pelota player's belt. Orange, beige and coffee-red terracotta, slightly broken and restored, mark of time. Veracruz, Mexico, AD 200 - 700 45 x 27 x 30 cm Thermoluminescence analysis by the Kotalla laboratory, 12 January 1993 Provenance: Gaïa sale, Paris, 13 June 2007, lot no. 245 In the Veracruz region, the game of pelota is a major ritual practice, closely associated with the ruling elites. Representations of the players, identifiable by their protective belts, suggest a high social status and a function that is both political and ceremonial. This slender figure is distinguished by the accentuated length of the legs and the tension of the body, reflecting a formal effort to magnify the figure's presence. The posture, controlled and slightly crossed, combined with the finery and elements associated with the play, give the ensemble a calm authority, part of a tradition in which gesture and representation play a full part in the language of power.
