Description
- Priest associated with the cult of the feathered serpent. Beige terracotta with coffee-red and brown polychromy, slightly broken and glued, missing and restoration, mark of the time. Veracruz, Mexico, 450 - 900 AD 36 x 25 x 11 cm Provenance: Piasa sale, Paris, 28 November 2000, lot no. 160 quater In the Veracruz region, the cult of the feathered serpent is part of a Mesoamerican tradition that spread widely during the Classical period, attested both in Teotihuacan and in the Maya world. This divine figure, associated with the forces of life and fertility, varies from region to region, while retaining a strong symbolic identity. The headdress, with its raised elements clearly evoking the feathered serpent, links the figure to this cult. The hands pointing to the ground indicate a ritual gesture, possibly of blessing or intercession. The rich ornamentation and frontal aspect of the figure express a strong religious authority, in a tradition where the priest embodies the link between the world of the gods and the world of man.
