Located off the coast of Campeche, the island of Jaïna was an important centre for the production of terracotta figures associated with the Maya elite of the Classic period. These representations, often of high-ranking figures, showcase the attributes of power through headdresses, finery and codified postures. The hieratic posture, folded arms and large pectoral ornaments convey a high status, while the facial details - scarification marks and facial hair - reinforce the individuality of the figure. The overall quality of the modelling and the formal mastery give the figure great nobility and an assertive presence.
