Description
- Standing figure with armour and breastplate. Beige terracotta, discrete remains of polychromy, mark of time. Maya, Classical period, AD 600 - 900 19.3 x 11 x 5.5 cm Provenance: former Paris private collection Millon sale, Paris, 12 April 2016, lot no. 24 In the classical Maya world, warriors occupied a central position within city-states, where political power and military capacity were closely linked. Depictions of figures in armour and breastplates refer to this warrior elite, involved in conflicts, capture rituals and displays of strength. The equipment, often codified, marks the status of the combatant and plays a part in the staging of authority, with warfare taking on both a political and ceremonial dimension.
