This urn is one of a number produced in Monte Albán, a major centre of Zapotec civilisation, where these works played an important role in ritual practices.
The figure represents the god Cocijo, a major divinity linked to rain, fertility and atmospheric forces, recognisable by his stylised attributes and elaborate finery. The diadem adorned with a central motif, possibly linked to an animal or mythical symbol, reinforces the sacred dimension of the representation.
The whole piece stands out for the richness of its ornamentation and the precision of its modelling, testifying to a great mastery of terracotta work and a desire to produce a structured, expressive image.
