Polychrome terracotta, marks of time
Nicoya, Costa Rica, Greater Nicoya region, polychrome Pataky style, Period VI, c. 1000 - 1350 AD
32 x 22 x 22 cm
Provenance: former private collection, Geneva
Jouan SVV sale, Montreuil, 30 April 2006, lot n°66
This piece belongs to the production of the Great Nicoya, characterised by elaborate polychromy on a light background and decoration structured in registers. The jaguar, treated expressively, occupies a central place, associated with a graphic repertoire composed of bands, cartouches and motifs evoking stylised writing.
In these traditions, the jaguar evokes notions of power and transformation, often linked to natural cycles. The painted decorations, organised with precision, contribute to a symbolic reading of the object, in which each element is part of a codified visual language.
The ensemble is distinguished by the quality of the design and the balance of the polychromy, characteristic of Pataky ceramics, which spread throughout the region through trade.
