Description
- Vase with stirrup handle representing a duck ready to take flight. Coffee-red and brown terracotta, slightly broken and glued, some chips and small pieces missing. Vicús, Peru 24 x 22 x 12.5 cm Provenance: Piasa sale, Paris, 28 November 2000, lot no. 98.1 The Vicús culture developed on the north coast of Peru, in a region characterised by fertile valleys and wetlands favourable to a rich biodiversity. Ceramic production from this period gave pride of place to the animal world, often depicted with a keen sense of observation. The duck, captured here in a movement suggesting flight, is reminiscent of this environment and an essential food resource. The attention paid to volume and modelling reflects a desire to recreate the vitality of the subject, in a style that is both simple and expressive.
