with a prisoner warrior chewing coca
Polychrome terracotta with fine scattered traces of manganese oxide.
Mochica I, Peru, 100 BC to 100 AD
19.1 × 11 cm
Provenance: Estate of Mr S., Geneva, constituted between 1970 and 1980. Items imported into France before the entry into force of Regulation (EU) 2019/880 of 17 April 2019, applicable from 28 June 2025.
Mochica art often depicted war and its consequences: ritual combat, the capture of prisoners and the staging of their humiliation. Defeated warriors are frequently depicted seated, shackled or wearing a rope around their necks, an explicit sign of domination and the transfer of power to the victor. The pitcher slung over the shoulder suggests that the captive has been reduced to the role of servant. The coca, visible here through the chew, is a reminder of the place of this plant in Andean social and ritual practices, including in situations of trial and constraint.
