Provenance: European private collection Exhibitions : Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, exhibition of student work, class of 2016 FR Amoako Boafo was born in 1984 in Accra, Ghana, where he now lives and works. Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, he quickly made a name for himself with his singular approach to the representation of black bodies, which he helps to reconfigure outside the frameworks imposed by dominant narratives. His career was marked in 2017 when he won the Walter Koschatzky Jury Prize, signalling the emergence of a strong voice on the contemporary scene. Renowned for his finger-painted portraits, Boafo's pictorial practice is both direct and deeply embodied. His figures, often depicted in close-up against monochrome backgrounds, immediately catch the eye. Their confident postures and frontal gazes establish a relationship of intimacy and confrontation with the viewer. By isolating his subjects from any narrative context, he refocuses attention on their presence, dignity and individuality, giving his compositions a strength that is both visual and symbolic. The work presented here, produced as part of his studies in Vienna, already bears witness to this research. Through this work, Boafo laid the foundations for a pictorial language that would become emblematic. His work is now recognised internationally. His works have been included in major public and private collections, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Tate Modern in London and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. They have also been shown in numerous institutions, from Vienna to Miami, via Seattle and San Francisco. Through her portraits, Amoako Boafo engages in essential reflection on the visibility, representation and affirmation of black identities. Her work, which is both sensitive and assertive, explores the power of the gaze and the presence of the body as places of resistance, pride and reappropriation.
