Abe Odedina, born in Ibadan in 1960, is both an architect and a self-taught painter. His pictorial practice developed following his discovery of the so-called magical popular arts, particularly in Brazil, before being enriched by Haitian voodoo traditions.
Painting in acrylic on plywood, he creates flat compositions, free from the rules of perspective and gravity, that invite a symbolic and mythical reading of the world. His visual universe, vibrant with colour and imagination, is a continuation of the expressive figurative paintings seen in urban spaces from Lagos to Salvador and Port-au-Prince.

Abe Odedina, born in 1960 in Ibadan, is both an architect and a self-taught painter. His painting practice developed following his discovery of so-called "magical" folk arts, particularly in Brazil, before being enriched by Haitian voodoo traditions.
Painting with acrylics on plywood, he creates flat compositions, free from the rules of perspective and gravity, that invite a symbolic and mythical interpretation of the world. His visual universe, vibrant with colour and imagination, is part of the tradition of expressive figurative paintings found in urban spaces, from Lagos to Salvador to Port-au-Prince.
