Brandon LIPCHIK Untitled (Burger) - 2020 Mixed media on canvas Signed and dated on the back 150.4 x 129.7 x 8.8 cm Mixed media on canvas; signed and dated on the back 59.2 x 51.1 x 3.5 in. Provenance: Galerie Julien Cadet, Paris Acquired directly from the latter by the current owner Exhibitions : Paris, Galerie Julien Cadet, Brandon Lipchik - Lawnscaping, 30 May to 13 June 2020 FR Lawnscaping is a solo exhibition by Brandon Lipchik, whose new series of paintings explores the interweaving of identity and personal history in the context of American lawn culture. Some of Lipchik's references come from American films of the 80s and 90s, such as Suburbia, Blue Velvet, American Beauty, or David Lynch's Twin Peaks, which sometimes express a sense of unease, even drama, hidden behind the conformism of average American life, very much inspired by his home town in Pennsylvania. Lipchik has thought out the composition and staging of the various shots using the very high views used in cinematography to evoke a feeling of surveillance or vulnerability linked to being spied on. This constant framing is also reminiscent of vertical plunge perspectives similar to those used in video games. The term Lawnscaping was coined by Brandon Lipchik to contextualise the setting of a private but publicly visible outdoor landscape and the process of creating a fictional world and setting. Often taking screenshots of moving video, Lipchik uses 3D modelling software and other digital tools to reconstruct and create figurative scenes that reinvent the male gaze and digital bodies. While creating new stories through painting on canvas, Lipchik once again gives the impression that the viewer is a hidden observer, capturing first-hand the private sphere of his characters. The characters are placed in space and, as they spend their free time, the viewer, like a voyeur, can observe them through barriers or other points of view. EN "Lawnscaping" is a solo exhibition by Brandon Lipchik that explores, through a new series of paintings, the intertwining of identity and personal history, using the American culture of the "lawn"-a patch of private grass-as its setting. Some of Lipchik's references draw from American films of the 1980s and 1990s, such as Suburbia, Blue Velvet, American Beauty, and David Lynch's Twin Peaks, which sometimes convey a sense of unease-or even drama-hidden behind the conformity of middle-class American life, heavily inspired by his hometown in Pennsylvania. Lipchik conceives the composition and staging of the various shots using high-angle views, a technique used in cinematography to evoke a sense of surveillance or vulnerability associated with being watched. This consistent framing also recalls vertical perspectives similar to the so-called orthographic views found in video games. The term "Lawnscaping" was coined by Brandon Lipchik to describe the setting of a private outdoor landscape that is visible to everyone, as well as the process of creating a fictional world and staging it. Often working from screenshots of moving videos, Lipchik uses 3D modeling software and other digital tools to reconstruct and create figurative scenes that reimagine the male gaze and digital bodies. While creating new narratives through painting on canvas, Lipchik once again gives the impression that the viewer is a hidden observer, catching a live glimpse into the private sphere of his characters. These characters are thus placed within the space, and as they spend their free time, the viewer, like a voyeur, can observe them through barriers or other vantage points. Brandon LIPCHIK
