Ishmael Armah is an emerging Ghanaian artist, born in 1986 in Accra where he continues to live and work. He studied at Ghanatta College of Art & Design from 2017 to 2019, where he focused on Graphic Design and painting. A Junior Fellow at the Noldor Residency in 2023, the artist also held a solo exhibition at Chilli Art Projects in London in 2022.
Ishmael Armah's work focuses on the constant dialogue between the Western gaze and the heterogeneous African identity. The painter expresses this dialogue through references to traditional Ghanaian textiles and contemporary forms of fashion. These motifs are incorporated into his practice through a distinctive use of bright colours and pointillist brushstrokes. In this way, her art celebrates the rich cultural heritage of her country, between tradition and modernity.
