Raphael Adjetey Adjei Mayne, born in Accra in 1983, lives and works between Ghana and the United States. Trained as a painter at the Ghanatta College of Art and Design, he is developing a multimedia practice in which he combines vibrant portraits with the rich symbolism of Adinkra motifs, emblematic of Ghanaian culture.
At the heart of his work is the 'Faceless' series, based on photographs of people he knows, particularly the children who live in his neighbourhood. He captures a posture, the perception of the present moment and personal stories. The featureless faces allow viewers to imagine their own face or that of another person acting like a mirror.
In this portrait, entitled "Adjey Kofi", the figure stands out against a floral background inspired by a common practice in Ghana: being photographed outside, in front of the most beautiful gardens, because there is no access to a studio. These compositions give rise to dense, vibrant backgrounds, from which the figures seem to emerge. Violet, the artist's favourite colour, dominates, sometimes mixed with red canvases and wax fabrics, reinforcing the energy and joy of the scenes.
Raphael Adjetey Adjei Mayne's work has been shown at numerous international art fairs, including AKAA Paris, Investec Cape Town Art Fair, 1-54 African Art Fair New York, Art on Paper New York and Sydney Contemporary. His works have joined several institutional collections, including those of the MuCEM in Marseille and Harvard University in Cambridge.
