"Through her work, Thompson seeks to free our sense of identity from the burden of singularity - to find, within the formulas of seriality and abstraction, samples and extracts of a generative process that is less about productivity than about awakening an awareness of production, labour and (other people's) time."
Ann Lauterbach, "On Cheyney Thompson: The Task of Art in the Age of Information" in exhibition catalogue Cheyney Thompson: Metric, Pedestal, Landlord, Cabengo, Recit, Cambridge, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, List Visual Arts Center, 2012, p. 177
FR
Cheyney Thompson's practice revolves around a reflection on the production, distribution and exhibition of painting. Her projects, which often span several years, impose structures and constraints on the creation of her works. These limits in turn prove generative, giving rise to in-depth explorations of the pictorial medium and the issues surrounding it. By linking his works to mathematical and economic formulae, to his own work as an artist and to the architecture his paintings occupy, Thompson creates a tension between their formal qualities and the wider systems of circulation in which they are embedded.

Cheyney Thompson's practice is centered on an inquiry into the production, distribution, and exhibition of painting. His projects, which often span several years, impose structures and constraints onto the making of his work. These limitations are in turn generative, resulting in exhaustive investigations into the medium of painting and the problems that surround it. Tying his works to mathematical and economic formulas, his own labor as an artist, and the architecture that his paintings occupy, Thompson enacts a tension between their formal qualities, and the larger systems of circulation they inhabit.
