Philippe Cognée paints his canvases with wax, heated then crushed, producing a blurred effect on the textured surface that questions the exhaustion of the image as much as the human condition in relation to its urban environment. Using polaroids or photographs from his personal archives, the artist depicts abandoned urban or intimate places. In so doing, he pursues a reflection on the singular and the collective, the visible and the invisible, the territories of reality and those of art. His work also questions the role of painting in a society where images, under the influence of new technologies, are both omnipresent and impoverished.
Over the last twenty years, Philippe Cognée's research has led him to confront a crude and banal reality, made up of motorways, suburbs, industrial abattoirs, supermarket shelves and recycling plants. In the words of Guy Tosatto, director of the Musée de Grenoble, he paints a singular portrait of our "marked-out and elusive" reality.
Landscapes are one of the artist's recurring subjects: wild or cultivated fields, scrub, trees, forests, sometimes seen through the window of a train...

Philippe Cognée creates his paintings using wax, which heats and then smears, producing a blurred effect on the textured surface that explores the exhaustion of the image as well as the human condition, particularly in relation to the urban environment. Drawing on Polaroids or photographs from his personal archives, the artist depicts abandoned urban or intimate spaces. In doing so, he explores the singular and the collective, the visible and the invisible, the realms of reality and those of art. His work also questions the role of painting in a society where the image, under the influence of new technologies, is both omnipresent and impoverished.
For the past twenty years, Philippe Cognée's research has led him to confront a raw and mundane reality, made up of highways, suburbs, industrial slaughterhouses, supermarket shelves, and recycling plants. He paints a singular portrait of our "marked-out and elusive" reality, in the words of Guy Tosatto, director of the Musée de Grenoble.
Landscape is one of the artist's recurring subjects: wild or cultivated fields, brush, trees, forests-sometimes viewed through a train window...
