Description
Kelley WALKER Untitled - 2005 Scanned image with chocolate silkscreen on canvas Signed and dated on the back 43 x 66 cm Scanned image with silkscreened chocolate on canvas; signed and dated on the back 16.9 x 26.0 in. Provenance: Paula Cooper Gallery, New York Private collection, Paris FR Kelley Walker uses techniques derived from Pop Art (such as collage, photography and screen printing) and contemporary digital tools to question the circulation and consumption of images. Through collage, borrowing, displacement and juxtaposition, Kelley Walker observes the media dissemination of the image and explores its irreducible materiality. Chocolate drips, shattered windscreens, stickers, redactions: in Kelley Walker's work there is a recognition of urban and anonymous gestures, collective and regressive, all acts of insubordination to the messages imposed by the mechanised arrangements of the media. This work is part of the Black Stars Press series, which superimposes silkscreen images similar to those used by Warhol and layers of chocolate. "Chocolate is a very connotative organic material. It's either black or white," says the museum director. In the history of contemporary art, it's also a highly perishable material that can't be preserved, the kind of material favoured by a major artist like Dieter Roth," explains Lionel Bovier at the Mamco exhibition in Geneva.
