Matthew Eguavoen was born in 1988 in Edo State, Nigeria, and lives and works in Lagos. Initially trained in civil engineering at the University of Port Harcourt, he turned to art in his final year of study, developing a unique, self-taught pictorial practice.
His work, which is essentially figurative, focuses on portraits, which he paints in oil, acrylic, charcoal and graphite. Through his models, he explores individual emotions and stories, while at the same time placing his work within a broader reflection on the social, economic and political realities of Nigeria.
Matthew Eguavoen is sensitive to mental health issues, and his work highlights the ways in which mental health can be neglected or stigmatised. His work can be found in private collections in West Africa, the United States and Europe.
