Description
Tarik KISWANSON 1974 - 2016 Hand-woven stainless steel 253 x 135 x 18 cm Handwoven stainless steel 99.60 x 53.14 x 7.08 in. Provenance: carlier / gebauer, Berlin Acquired directly from the latter by the current owner Exhibitions : Berlin, carlier / gebauer, Tarik Kiswanson | Contact Sheet, 30 March to 23 April 2016 FR Kiswanson's practice is shaped by a sculptural vocabulary marked by the hybridisation of Middle Eastern cultural heritage and Western modernism, of art and craft. Enigmatic works emerge from an intense process of cross-fertilisation, inciting a ceaseless tension between their two poles. This is why their final meaning remains constantly in suspense. Contact Sheet finds its genesis in photographs dating from the 1970s that document the artist's family life. The embroidery of the traditional costumes in the photographs becomes the central subject of the work. Playing on a change of scale, from the microscopic to the monumental, Tarik Kiswanson strips the motifs of their folkloric references. Detached from any original context, the raw essence of his imagery opens the way to a multitude of interpretations. Quasi-abstract, the enlarged details of the embroidery illustrate the circulation of certain primary forms across different eras and geographical regions, offering a tacit progression from the subjective and personal to the objective.
