Provenance: Polka Galerie, Paris Private collection, Paris A Polka Galerie certificate signed by the artist will be given to the buyer FR In 1986, for a series of television documentaries, William Klein asked several leading photographers to comment on their contact sheets. Given the interest and success of his films, Klein began to reconsider the very purpose of the contact sheet. By isolating the chosen image, printing it in large format and surrounding it with a thick line of paint, he amplified the importance he gave to his choices. These painted contacts represent Klein's desire to create a graphic bridge between painting and photography, a complete and original work. In November 2010, in collaboration with the Polka gallery, William Klein presented the Ali + Klein series, a series of painted contacts produced between August and October 2010. The images in these contacts are actually screen captures from the two documentaries Klein made in 1964, Cassius the Great, and 1974, Ali the Greatest. After following the boxer for more than ten years, William Klein regretted that he only had 2 photographs of the 'legend', everything else being on film. With the help of his son, Pierre Klein, and his assistant, Pierre Louis Denis, he watched his documentaries in slow motion to capture the most relevant sequences, which were then printed in large format and painted. These contacts-paintings by Ali are the result of William Klein's three specialities: photography, cinema and painting.
