Title: The Game of ‘Main Chaude’ in a pastoral scene.
Based on a cartoon by one of Antoine Watteau’s followers, probably Nicolas Lancret or Jean-Baptiste Pater.
In wool and silk.
This original, skilfully rendered scene evokes the rural amusements and games of the late 17th and early 18th centuries, which were later depicted by Jean-Baptiste Oudry around 1750 and by Jean-Baptiste Huet in the late 18th century.
Remarkable dynamism in the group of figures (shepherdesses and shepherds) surrounded by lush vegetation, colourfully rendered on the left-hand side.
Note the presence of two sheep on the right and the architecture of a garden temple.
Border decorated with garlands of flowers and foliage intertwined with finely drawn, crenellated stems
H_280 cm W_286 cm
Restorations
