Léon-François-Antoine FLEURY (Paris 1804-1858) Portrait of Martin Guillaume Biennais (1764-1843), goldsmith and his wife Marie Anne (?-1859) Pair of canvases, oval view. Signed lower left Léon Fleury and L. Fleury 32.5 x 27 cm and 37 x 28.8 cm Restoration period wood and gilded stucco frame. A pupil of Jean Victor Bertin and Louis Hersent, our artist, known for his brilliant career as a landscape painter, is often mentioned with only his first name. often mentioned with only his first name. Yerres, Propriété Caillebotte, 29 May-3 October 2021, pp. 86-89. In 1835, Biennais asked Caillebotte to paint his portrait and that of his wife. He wore the Légion d'honneur on the lapel of his frock coat of his frock coat, his left hand hidden in a Napoleonic gesture. With his right hand, he holds out a medal effigy of the Emperor, his protector. There are other replicas of our two portraits, with few variations, at the Château de Malmaison museum, (canvases, 37x29 cm, acquired in 2013 ( M.M.2013.2.4).
