LONDON, 1839 Large silver coffee pot or jug in a baluster shape, resting on a pedestal The body is decorated with incised rocaille motifs forming foliage, with plain areas (unadorned). The motif is repeated on the spout and lid. Spout with fluted sides terminating in a fleur-de-lis. Handle in the form of scrolls. Fretwork in the form of flowers and foliage. Circular, stepped base. English hallmarks for London, 1821–1856. Date letter ‘D’ and duty mark ‘Victoria’, probably for London, 1839. Goldsmiths’ hallmarks: “EEBJW”, probably for Edward, Edward Junior, John & William Barnard (active c. 1829–1846/5). Numbered: 865 (handle and base). Control mark featuring a swan Base marked with the letter “Z”, bearing an engraved cross and probably an inventory number: “PHA 2004”. Total height including lid: 27.2 cm. Maximum width including spout and handle: 21.5 cm. Weight: 883 grams.
