Description
MARRET-BANCELIN Octagonal silver dish with a fluted rim, decorated with applied fleurs-de-lis at each clasp. The wing is engraved with a combined coat of arms beneath the count’s crown of the CHANDON DE BRIAILLES family, itself surmounted by a crouching greyhound holding a branch in its mouth: a shield presumed to be silver with a red fess, accompanied by three black shamrocks, two in the chief and one in the base. It is supported by two greyhounds facing each other, with the motto below: ‘Do what you must, come what may’ Minerva hallmark, 1st standard, on the wing. Signatures in full: ‘MARRET-BANCELLIN’ on the reverse, probably for the firm MARRET Frères (at 352 Rue Saint-Honoré, taken over by Jacques BANCELIN in 1912 (which was itself taken over by MELLERIO in 1942 and operated from 103 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in Paris). H: 4 cm. L: 53.5 cm. W: 39.5 cm. Weight: approximately 2,400 grams. Shows signs of wear (scratches and scuffs). We would like to thank Mr Francis Sanchez for identifying the coat of arms.
