A drawing characteristic of Inguimberty’s Indochinese period, this sheet depicts porters carrying a balance pole, or gánh, a recurring motif in his work. The medium of drawing allows the artist a free and spontaneous style. A rare study from this period to have survived, this large sheet highlights his talent as a draughtsman. The charcoal lines are strong and the blue pencil grid is crisp. As most of these preparatory sketches have been lost, it is moving to be able to admire one of the extremely rare drawings which, 100 years ago, served as the basis for masterful compositions.
