INCUNABULUM. SAINT ISIDORE OF SEVILLE: Isidori jiunioris. Hispalensis. Episcopi. Augsburg, Gunther Zainer, 1472;
In folio, vellum on wooden boards, ribbed spine, speckled red edges. 16th-century binding (fastenings missing). An exceedingly rare incunabulum comprising 264 unnumbered folios. The first four are in two columns for the tables, the remainder at 38 lines per page. It is illustrated with woodcut figures both within the text and as separate plates, including one depicting the phases of the moon and another showing a representation of Africa. Zainer printed this text in so-called Roman type. This is the first printed edition bearing a date; it is entirely rubricated in red and, on certain folios, in blue. It is in this work that the first known printed map of the world is found. It is a map in the shape of a T and an O. The world is represented by a circle, with Asia at the top (Oriens), Europe below the horizontal bar on the left (Septentrio) and Africa on the right (Meridies).
