BOCCACE (Jean): Des nobles maleureux. Newly printed in Paris in the year One Thousand Five Hundred and Thirty-Eight. Paris, Nicolas Couteau for Arnoul and Charles Langelier, 1538; In folio, olive morocco, decorated ribbed spine, gilt fillets framing the covers, title, place and date of publication stamped on the covers, red edges. 19th-century binding. A fine edition printed in Gothic type in two columns and illustrated with 7 woodcut vignettes; one of them depicts the author in his library. The title page is adorned with a large engraved frame by Gilles de Gourmont, featuring the coat of arms of the city of Cologne and comprising a ‘Triumph of Christ’ and a fine ‘Adoration of the Magi’. On the verso of the last folio is the mark of Jean Petit. From the libraries of Jacob P. R. Lyell, Cornelius Paine (1785–1869), a collector of English books whose library was sold at Sotheby’s in 1891, Andrew Rutherfurd and Silvain Brunschwig, along with their bookplates. Brunet, I, 988.
