In which, in accordance with the tradition of the most reliable writers, are described all the inhabited parts of the world… Basel, Henri Pierre, 1554; Large folio, vellum with richly embossed designs depicting wooden planks, clasps (missing). Contemporary binding. A new edition of this universal cosmography, of which there were numerous editions. This magnificent volume is brimming with numerous details on geography and history, and more generally on the knowledge of the world at that time. It is illustrated with a varying number of woodcuts depending on the edition. This particular edition comprises a title page, 14 double-page maps including a planisphere, a map based on Ptolemy’s work, maps of the major countries of Europe, India, Africa and the New World, and over 1,000 wood-engraved illustrations within the text, including views of cities—sometimes spread across two pages (Paris, Rome, Venice, Bern, Cologne, Vienna, Constantinople, Jerusalem…), two fold-out panoramas, and landscapes, scenes, figures, plants, animals (some fantastical), astronomical sketches, coats of arms and medals.
