BELLEAU (Remy): The Odes of Anacreon of Teos, translated from the Greek into French by Remi Belleau of Nogent-au-Perche, together with a few short hymns of his own composition. Paris, André Wechel, 1556; In 12, red morocco, decorated ribbed spine, triple gilt fillet on the covers, gilt edges. Gilt edges inside. Bound by Trautz-Bauzonnet. FIRST EDITION of Remy Belleau’s first book; the volume begins with an epistle ‘To Monseigneur Chrétophe de Choiseul, Abbot of Mureaux’. On the verso of the following leaf is printed P. de Ronsard’s ‘Elegy to Chrétophe de Choiseul, Abbot of Mureaux’. The collection of Odes occupies pp. 11 to 103; on p. 67 is the poem *Le Papillon*, dedicated to Ronsard. At the bottom of the last page of the ‘Elegy’ is the Latin epigram written to Remy Belleau by Jean Dorat. A very fine copy.
