RUSSIA. HERBERSTEIN (Sigismund, Freiherr von): *Moscovia der Haupstat in Reissen…*. Vienna, Michael Zimmermann, 1557; In folio, fawn half-calf with corner pieces, decorated ribbed spine, title label in green calfskin. Later binding. A very significant edition of this study of Russia, the first in the German language, by Herberstein, the Emperor’s first ambassador to Russia, who stayed there on two occasions in 1517 and 1519. He was commissioned by Archduke Ferdinand to report back on the religion of that country and to bring back books written in Russian. This edition contains a map of Muscovy, a plan of Moscow, its capital, numerous woodcut illustrations—the first of which depicts Tsar Vasilii seated on his throne—Russian warriors in traditional dress, animals, scenes of skiing and sledge-riding, weapons, etc.; as well as six colour-enhanced plates of figures in costume, including the author, Emperor Ferdinand, and so on. This extremely rare volume is enriched by two exceptionally rare leaflets.
