Description
MONTAIGNE (Michel de): Essays by Michel, Lord of Montaigne. Fifth edition, expanded to include a third book and six hundred additions to the first two. Paris, published by Abel L’Angelier, 1588; A substantial volume in quarto, 4 unnumbered folios and 504 numbered folios. However, the pagination is incorrect. Red morocco, decorated ribbed spine, double gilt line on the covers, with slipcase. Modern binding imitating a 17th-century style. Partly original edition; it is of great importance as the third book is published here for the first time and Montaigne himself corrected and made numerous additions to the first two books. Although L’Angelier states that this is the fifth edition, only three earlier editions are known. This is therefore the fourth edition of the Essays and the last published during Montaigne’s lifetime. Handwritten ex-libris on the title page belonging to René de Brisacier, treasurer in Bourges, 1711. Beautiful frontispiece title page; a minor historical blemish above the printer’s name led to a coat of arms being pasted onto the title page, and on the verso of the title page, Jean de Tournes’ motto was pasted onto the weak part of the page.
