Astronomical clock by Le Roy & Fils, Galerie Montpensier at the Palais Royal in Paris, second half of the 19th century Brass case, signed enamelled dials, Arabic numerals for the minutes (with the original anomaly of 35 instead of 30 at 6 o’clock) and Roman numerals for the hours, blued hands. Clock comprising a planetary dial and an aneroid barometer, with chimes for the hours and half-hours. Heliocentric planetary dial indicating daytime and night-time hours as well as the days of the week. Movement crafted by Honoré Pons. H 66 cm. Provenance: a Neuchâtel collection assembled between 1980 and 2010. Founded in Paris in 1764, the Le Roy firm established itself as one of the most prestigious French watchmaking houses. For his part, Honoré Pons, born in Paris in 1773, trained under the greatest masters of his time, notably Antide Janvier and the Lepaute family. Setting up his own business in 1803, he distinguished himself through his innovations in escapements and manufacturing processes. Tasked in 1806 with reorganising the Saint-Nicolas-d’Aliermont workshop, he transformed it into France’s leading manufacturer of ‘unfinished’ clock movements, renowned for their exceptional quality. A supplier to the leading Parisian clockmakers, honoured by the Academy of Sciences and awarded the Legion of Honour in 1839, Honoré Pons remains one of the leading figures in 19th-century French watchmaking.
