Description
"Sonambula" brooch Set with rose-cut diamonds and embellished with a crown motif set with pearls, inscribed ‘To the eminent artist Eemma Nevada, The Count of Michelena, Madrid, 16 December 88’, 19th-century piece, 585 gold and silver, L 9 cm, H 3.5 cm, 37 g. “La Sonnambula” is the title of an opera by Bellini. According to the sellers, this brooch is said to have been passed down from one opera singer to another, from the American soprano Emma Nevada (1859–1940) to Dame Joan Sutherland, the rising star who took on the role of Amina in the early 1960s. Provenance: former collection of Dame Joan Sutherland, known as ‘La Stupenda’.
