Description
"Barry FLANAGAN", co-published by the Waddington Custot Gallery. In mint condition, in blister pack.
This is the first monograph devoted to the work of Barry Flanagan (1941–2009), one of Britain’s most eminent sculptors.
Featuring over 200 colour reproductions and a recently compiled chronology, this book traces Flanagan’s life and work, from his first exhibition in London at the Rowan Gallery in 1966 to his final sculptures created in Ibiza in 2009.
A graduate of St Martin’s School of Art, Flanagan had already established a reputation as a leading figure of the avant-garde, a writer of concrete poetry and a pataphysician, adhering to Alfred Jarry’s ‘science of imaginary solutions’. He was quickly acclaimed by international critics for his intuitive and inventive approach to materials, which aligned him with new artistic practices and emerging movements such as Arte Povera, Land Art and Process Art. From 1972 onwards, challenging the function of public sculpture, Flanagan began to explore more traditional materials and methods, working in stone and bronze – the materials for which he is best known today.
Today, Flanagan’s characterful bronze hares are on display in numerous public spaces. He was drawn to this animal for its anthropomorphic potential and rich cultural iconography, and his monumental hares have now become popular landmarks in cities and landscapes around the world.
