Description
Evelyn WEISS – Ursula Schultze-Bluhm [1921–1999] – published by Hirmer, in German, 2006. In mint condition, in blister pack. Ursula (Ursula Schultze-Bluhm, 1921–1999), whose creative potential Jean Dubuffet had already recognised in 1954 for his legendary Musée de l’Art Brut, brought her enigmatic depictions to life through paintings of refined composition, often featuring sumptuous or morbid colours. ‘ ‘I impose my visions on reality – I am entirely artificial,’ the artist declared of her works, in which memories, associations and strange fantasies often intermingle with mythological elements to give rise to creations that occupy a place of their own in the history of art. In a spectrum oscillating between exuberant cheerfulness, sensuality and the demonic, figures that are by turns sumptuous and lifelike, and at other times frozen in coldness, come together to form paintings of a beauty that always seems dangerous. In addition to her painting, the artist proved herself, from the late 1950s onwards, to be a master of assemblage through her objects, which often resemble altars. This catalogue raisonné offers a scholarly analysis of Ursula’s drawings, paintings and objects. Numerous facets of her life and work are brought to light through a wealth of archival material, photographs and writings.”
