Description
Fragments of a painted frieze with heraldic decoration, 17th century (or earlier) – metopes?
A collection of painted wooden fragments forming the remains of an ancient decorative frieze, probably from a chest, panelling or piece of furniture.
Polychrome decoration dominated by red and black, comprising stylised motifs: coats of arms, medallions, crosses and foliage.
A hypothetical reconstruction allows for the creation of a coherent horizontal frieze (shown in the illustration).
Condition: heavily deteriorated – wood worm-eaten, damage, losses, wear and tear.
17th century or earlier (to be confirmed).
Sold as is.
Length: approximately 37 cm
