Description
Salvador DALI (after) Flesh of a rhinocerontic hen or cosmic rhinoceros, bronze print with green and gold patina, numbered out of 350, foundry stamp AIRAINDOR 35.9 x 9 x 16.2 cm Bronze of a later multiple edition, while the original was produced in 1956 in 8 copies plus 4 artist's proofs. Here Dali explored the theme of the thrill: the granulations on the skin of an Asian rhinoceros giving rise to titles of paintings, sculptures and drawings such as Chair de poule inaugurale, Chair de poule rhinocerontique, Rhinocéros habillé en dentelles and Le Rhinocéros - hommage à Albrecht Dürer. Dalí proposed adding giraffe legs to The Rhinoceros Dressed in Lace, like the elephants in his painting The Temptation of Saint Anthony, and adding a pyramid of sea urchins on its back for the film. Rhinocerotic Goose Flesh was born. Dalí confided to Alain Bosquet his dream of seeing this monumental statue erected in Paris: "exactly where, at the Trocadero, there used to be a bronze effigy of a rhinoceros. I want it to be a cosmic rhinoceros. Bibliography: Robert and Nicolas Descharnes, Dali sculptures and objects, Eccart 2003, p.71
