Description
Portrait of Emperor Napoleon in his coronation robes, wearing the Grand Collar of the Legion of Honour. Oil on board. A tear. 14 x 10 (visible area). In a Louis XVI-style frame, 25.5 x 18 cm. Napoleon is wearing the grand coronation costume designed by Jean-Baptiste Isabey and Charles Percier, consisting of a long ivory satin robe embroidered with floral friezes in gold thread and a large purple velvet cloak lined with ermine, also embroidered in gold. This attire differs from that of the monarchs of the Ancien Régime. Indeed, the purple colour of the cloak replaces royal blue and draws on the tradition of the Roman emperors. The crown of golden laurel leaves – also derived from ancient iconography – the grand collar of the Legion of Honour, the sceptre, the hand of justice and the imperial orb resting on the cushion in the background, were all designed by Martin-Guillaume Biennais, the Emperor’s official goldsmith. In the middle ground, one can make out the back of the throne created by the cabinetmaker Jacob-Desmalter based on a design by Percier and Fontaine for the Tuileries Palace. This portrait bears a resemblance to the official portrait of GERARD FRANÇOIS PASCAL SIMON BARON (1770–1837). The position of the head differs
