He trained in graphic arts before founding Le 9ème Concept in 1990, alongside Stéphane Carricondo and Jerk45. Today, this collective brings together around ten artists from diverse backgrounds. Ned draws on a wide range of influences. His Breton roots have shaped his style, which is constantly evolving. As such, interlaced motifs abound, taking the form of volutes, spirals or complex labyrinths. Today, he aspires to a more abstract style, combining tribal heraldry and geometry. Drawing on medieval traditions, he employs various techniques: painting, ink drawings, engraving and bas-reliefs. His work is highly elaborate and meticulously detailed, teeming with intricately interwoven, finely drawn lines. Work worthy of a master goldsmith. His interlacing of flames, arabesques and plant friezes reveal a wholly original heraldic style comprising unprecedented coats of arms and crests. Through his pen, the artist creates a fusion of motifs – banners, streamers, standards, oriflammes and seals – which are no longer the preserve of a single social class but lend an air of nobility and aristocracy to the setting or subject he paints. The colour palette used is often limited. Sometimes it is simply gold on a black or dark blue background. The artist embraces this choice of minimal colours, as his work focuses more on shapes and lines. One can faintly make out faces that Ned will meticulously refine. Only the eyes and the gaze of the person depicted manage to break free from the interlacing mesh. All these networks express secret relationships that trap the human figure within the manifestation of another reality. One almost discovers a second landscape within them – the very landscape of our imagination, fuelled by a poetic excitement born of the resurgence of ancient cults. Often symmetrical, his work emerges as if it were the result of a folding process. Is all this meant to signify the meeting of complementary, or even parallel, worlds? In his quest to modernise his artistic style, Ned creates surprising compositions. Like a contemporary alchemist, he brings together a multitude of symbols, plants, animals and faces within his medallions. All these artefacts form a sigil, a graphic seal which, through long, tapered rays, channels the energy of the place towards the viewer. This always stems from the artist’s deliberate and expressed need to create syncretic works – an intertwined, ever-unfinished narrative of our contemporary Western societies as they face a major civilisational shift.
