Joachim Romain creates environmental artworks to tame and enhance urban architecture.
Born to an art-loving mother and a photographer father, Joachim Romain developed, from his teenage years onwards, a natural inclination to observe and photographically capture the mood of the advertising remnants in the backstreets of Le Havre, his hometown.
Later, ever on the lookout, he travelled through cities and countries, tirelessly continuing to document the evolution of the street’s ‘monuments’. In this way, he collects images of layered advertising posters, weathered walls covered in graffiti, and accumulations of paper and organic matter littering the ground or clinging to poles, railings, grilles, advertising columns, wall-mounted gas boxes and the city’s electricity meter boxes. He roams the streets on the lookout for piles of debris degraded by human hands, worn down by the elements, and decomposed by the passage of time. Then, he delves deeper into the city’s underbelly. Through his clandestine and solitary excursions into abandoned sites, disused tunnels, building sites and catacombs… this urban explorer infiltrates these spaces to gain a better understanding of the modern city and its hidden recesses. Journey after journey, the urbexer explores the underbelly of capital cities and gathers data from the public spaces of the urban landscape, as if to commit the ruins of our society to memory and, in doing so, assess the prospects for our world. Then, from being a ‘spectator’ who captures the transformations of these urban remnants, Joachim Romain becomes an ‘actor’ who leaves his mark – his gestures, his stride… – by sculpting directly onto the street. Armed only with his keys, he slashes, cuts, scratches, tears and rips apart the advertisements. By playing on the chance discoveries of the various layers of advertising paper, faces encounter slogans, typefaces rub shoulders with colours, and the flat coexists with movement and volume. Integrated into the urban jungle, he contributes both to its metamorphosis and its regeneration. He is content to capture the moment through photography, accepting that his work will evolve without him. The artist then photographs his ‘street art’ to leave a record of his presence and his act, before leaving it to the street and passers-by to decide on any potential future reinterpretations of his ephemeral urban sculptures. In this way, he anchors the present in the moment without conditioning or imprisoning the future. Whether photographer-sculptor or sculptor-photographer, Joachim Romain creates environmental tableaux to tame and sublimate urban architecture. He collects materials produced by our consumer society directly from the street and recycles them to give them a new lease of life, reactivating them once more before they fade away. He seems to want to present us with his vision of our world: a blend of a dystopian society and an ideal city that occasionally produces urban ‘monsters’. It is but a short step from the real to the virtual. Joachim Romain has extended his insatiable desire for transformation and transgression from the city’s voracious urban advertising landscape to that of the web, without realising that he would be contributing to his own creative metamorphosis.
