Description
Elena Perlino TURIN – EVANGELICAL CHURCH Original photograph, Photographic paper on Forex 50 x 75 cm Whilst in France the debate on the abolition of prostitution has been reignited, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime has ranked Nigeria among the eight countries with the highest rates of human trafficking in the world. For many years, the photographer Elena Perlino has been working on this vital subject, focusing primarily on its links with Italy, a country where a vast sex industry is flourishing, based on the trafficking of African women. In this photograph taken in Turin in 2012, women from Benin City (in Edo State, Nigeria) – the hometown of nearly 80 per cent of the women who are victims of trafficking – have gathered in an Evangelical church to pray on a Sunday.
